Music under the stars

There is much great music on this five CD set and the Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra performs well. The set is a bit pricy but well worth it.

Great selection

I had owned an LP titled “I like Tchaikovsky” circa 1959, and were selections by the Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra, Carmen Dragon and Felix Slatkin conducting, and another LP with Felix Slatkin, Dragon, etc., and the Hollywood Bowl Orch., “Strings by Starlight”. I thought I’d never hear this wonderful music again, but lo and behold, after losing the original LP’s some time ago, along comes EMI to produce most of those wonderful recordings via a CD box set, with the added attractions of MORE! There’s really too much music to comment on individually, except to say that the “Capriccio Italien” finale by Tchaikovsky and with Carmen Dragon conducting, is THE MOST exciting finale in all of Classical recorded music, IMHO that is. But, there is much more in here. A tad pricey, agreed, but, well worth it for fantastic music.

Rousseau lifts saxophone to new heights

This is a wonderful and eclectic album for any music fan, not just saxophone players. Some of the stand-out tracks on this recording include Rousseau’s Porgy and Bess Suite, his version of Bruch’s Kol Nidre and his performance of Bernard Heiden’ Diversion for Saxophone and Band (one of the few pieces that is in its original form). His playing is always musical and he does wonderful things with all the pieces on the album, especially the ones mentioned above. The Heiden Diversion is a particular favourite of mine, it not only has its virtuosic sections, but has a lovely, haunting middle section where the saxophone just soars above the band’s accompaniment. This recording definitely belongs in any serious music lover’s collection.

Splendid Sibelius

Besides being a superb interpreter of Delius, Elgar and Vaughan Williams Barbirolli shows himself in this set to be a most worthy Sibelian. Some may complain that his tempi are slow at times but Barbirolli never fails to make these symphonies interesting and often gloriously inspiring. A big plus is the crystal clear sound; you can really hear those woodwinds (so important in Sibelius) and what an impact those cellos make at the beginning of the bleak and somber 4th symphony. There is also a generous allotment of some of the shorter pieces. Whether this is a top choice will depend on the listener but I think it holds its own against some of the top choices out there including Davis–Boston Symphony (Philips Duo) and Ashkenazy–Philharmonia (London).

Vintage Collection!!!

I have this set of splendid Sibelius Symphonies for over a year now.I consider myself lucky to have stumbled upon choosing this set ahead of other more “Reputed”performances by TOP Orchestras under Great Conductors.I have been listening to this set for over a year and the least i can say is that it is nothing short of a Revelation.No other conductor or orchestra matches Sir John Barbirolli’s understanding and Passionate intensity(sorry Eugene Ormandy,Leonard Bernstein,Mariss Janson)in these performances with the Halle Orchestra.The Halle Orchestra perform splendidly individually as well as collectively,The strings have an intensity ,the woodwinds have an ethereal character and the Brass are quite simply Majestic.Barbirolli brings out the Heroics,the passionate intensity,the poignance,the Mystical quality,the gay abandon and folklike singing quality in these marvellous orchestral works of Sibelius.The pacing is just right ,lingering in passages of great beauty like in the slow movement of the Fifth Symphony,moving with urgency when required.The music is ever flowing in a seamless way and not just pieced together with studied musicianship.The orchestra breathes a free air with an element of spontaneous music making.
Remember how Bruno Walter turned out splendid performances of Beethoven and Brahms Symphonies with a handpicked Columbia sympony Orchestra!Quite the same here.I am yet to listen to Sir Colin Davis Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Performances of these works.I am not sure whether they will measure upto this splendid performance by Sir John.It is not about efficiency or discipline.It is all about BEING INSPIRED!!!Sir John Barbirolli and his splendid Halle Orchestra Musicians are on a different plane,the rarefied realms of the spirit!Noble and Sublime.

A highly personalized tribute to a composer he loved

Sir John Barbirolli (1899-1970) established the greatness of Mancester’s Halle’ Orchestra during his 28 years as their principal conductor from his 1943 appointment to his 1970 death. An London of Cockney birth, Barbirolli was linked to relatively few composers in his long career with Sibelius being one of those he most loved. His style was to personalize music, not merely to condcut it. While not as wayward in style as the likes of Leopold Stokowski or Nikolaus Harnoncourt, who could (and do) infuriate listeners with their personalizations, Barbirolli was more akin to Leonard Bernstein.

As he showed in his highly personal recordings of the Beethoven “Eroica” symphony and Elgar’s Symphony No. 2, Barbirolli conducted with relatively slow tempi and asked his orchestra to voice the music differently than others. Both those characteristics are apparent in these recordings of the seven Sibelius symphonies and extracts from his other orchestral works.

I bought this set especially to hear what Barbirolli would do with the Symponies 3, 4 and 6 — especially the latter of the trio. I am pleased to say Barbirolli is as good an exponent of the symphonies as the other reviewers here would lead you to believe. He focused on the woodwind voicing more so than the strings or brass, giving these often quiet and introspective scores a slightly different sound world than other conductors. He is just as good in the bigger and more romantic Symphonies 1, 2 and 5, as well, with his rendering of Symphony 2 being a special triumph.

I can’t say I was as impressed by all the other music in this box as some around here. In particular the first disk of the set that includes the warhorses Finlandia, Karelia suite, Swan of Tuonela and Lemminkainen’s Return, were not as propulsive or effective as recordings I’ve heard from other conductors incluidng Ormandy. Still, they add a lot to your understanding of both the way Barbirolli views this composer and your appreciation of the Halle’ Orchestra, whose members play exceptionally throughtout.

For me, this was my first exposure to some of the other music recorded here including the Scenes Historiques and Rakastava selections. With early opus numbers (25 and 14, respectively) these come from the composer’s earlier romantic days before the Russian takeover and his own drinking turned him — and his later music — somber and moody. While Sibelius represent an icier Scandanavian landscape in later opi, these represent the romantic Fin at his best.

The symphonies are the main course on this menu and they are universally pleasing to the ear, head and heart in this recordings made in London’s Kingsway Hall. This collection lets you know what a splendid conductor Barbirolli was, what a splendid orchestra he developed in the Halle’, and what a wonderful recording venue was Kingsway Hall. All things considered, aside from a few disappointments, this is a cherishable collection.

Fresh take on Bloch’s concerto

Ernest Bloch, who wrote so authentically and intimately for solo strings, was also (like Enescu) pianist enough to develop a personal keyboard style, including brilliant and effective accompaniments and, especially in his solo sonata, a modern manner spangled with handfuls of percussive note-clusters, somewhat akin to soundscapes by Ornstein and Rudhyar although ultimately personal. In his 1948 piano concerto, however, Bloch attempted to appeal to virtuosi by diluting his personal piano style with conventional passagework of the sort that littered concertos popular in his youth. For this listener it has always been discomfiting to hear such derivative material coming from a composer who had only recently completed the bravely original and mesmerizing second string quartet.

Happily, the present 2006 recording presents Bloch’s ambitious concerto in a new light. The story is told most simply by comparing timings of the opening movement, marked Pesante: Mitchell and Golschmann, 15:18; Dinova and Tschernushenko, 15:39; Yui and Amos, 15:45; Lin and Starek, 16:51. Lin and Starek are, in fact, so much slower as to be startling. I had made the mistake of reading the booklet notes before listening (more on this below), so at first the performance struck me as plodding — either sour, bored, and kapellmeisterisch or, worse, high handed, as if playing badly would demonstrate the music’s meretriciousness.

Whatever baggage attended my initial audition, a few days of listening made clear the integrity and insight of Lin’s and Starek’s performance. What emerges is a work written in unflinching assent to the spiritual community of mankind at a time when unprecedented atrocities committed upon members of the composer’s own race had been recently revealed. In this account the composer’s virtuostic gestures are no less formulaic than before, yet their context is now so stark and powerful as to easily sublimate such flourishes into a larger and coherent whole. In short, as performed and engineered here, the concerto’s shortcomings are dwarfed by its terrible beauties.

About the notes: it is difficult not to read them as (just barely) covertly anti-Semitic. It is one thing to be dismissive of the music you are annotating. It is another to distort and trivialize a composer’s biography so as to suggest that he has known nothing of struggle, that his music is the effusion of a privileged, by implication superficial bystander. Such distortion is all the more regrettable when it echos closely the ad hominem arguments made by loyal Aryans from Wagner onwards against Mendelssohn, Hiller, and subsequent Jews of note. How disheartening that Haenssler Verlag would in 2006 disseminate an annotation written in the spirit of the glorious 1930s.

Shostakovich Symphony No 5 Symphony No

Bernstein electricity, especially in the Shostakovich

To my knowledge this superb concert has not been available on DVD until now, so its appearance is almost miraculous. Taped by a Japanese crew in 1979, it is a fine example of the kind of riveting musicmaking that Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic made at the peak of their time together.

The Schumann Symphony No. 1 (“Spring”) is delightful, and here Bernstein captures much of the work’s inherent lightness and lyricism, even occasional playfulness. The playing of the orchestra is beyond praise (and it’s fun to recognize the occasional musician who is still playing with the group today).

But for me the real prize here is an absolutely blazing account of the Shostakovich Symphony No. 5, one of the composer’s strongest and most popular works, and it is tailor-made for Bernstein’s drama and intensity. As good as his studio recording is (also with the New York Philharmonic) this one is even more so and in better sound, and an outstanding example of Bernstein at his most charismatic.

The filming has the occasional camera trick, e.g., diagonally split-screens now and then, but overall the photography is quite good. Cameras browse every section of the orchestra for close-ups, and the picture is clear enough that every bit of sweat falling off the conductor’s brow can be seen. (The Tokyo concert hall looks to be a bit on the warm side, at least when this was filmed.) The sound quality is excellent, capturing the sense of occasion, and you may feel like joining in when the uproarious cheering and applause kick in at the end.

Not only highly recommended, but probably essential for Bernstein fans — and one of the most stirring performances around of the Shostakovich.

Desert Island

Back in the 1970s I owned Bernstein’s New York Phil Shostakovich 5 on a disc I wore to pieces, along with a family that probably swore against all things Russian. So it was with enormous anticipation that I awaited this new dvd on my wish list — and quite amazing my wife bought it for me!

I’m no formal classical music critic so I’m not going to pick this 1979 performance (or the accompanying Schumann #1)in Japan apart to prove my point.

The music is as I remember it on that old disc. Marvelous tempo, nuance and power. An absolutely first rate bit of audio. But it is the video that puts the hair on my neck up perfectly straight. Brilliant color and coverage of the orchestra by a team that doubtless studied rehearsals very well indeed. And, if you want to see Lenny in full glory, here he is. Multiple angles, grimaces, smiles, and, ultimately, his own kind of euphoria.

I’ve enjoyed Shostakovich most of my life. Have read several biographies and marveled at his bravery and breadth. I had the privilege of seeing Rostraprovich do the cello concerto (at a San Francisco Symphony concert back in the 60s where they threw high school kids out for cheering after the first movement), and, recently a stunner of a Leningrad symphony by Gergiev and his Bolshoi Orch. But this dvd is something to savor over and over.

Put this one in your collection. Brilliant and satisfying. If you’ve never appreciated classical music or Leonard Bernstein, be ready for an eye opener.
